EMBASSY IN AMMAN DENIES TOXIC WASTE DEAL WITH ISRAEL

AMMAN, Jordan, November 9, 1998 (Petra-JNA news agency web site, via BBC Summary of World Broadcasts) The Mauritanian embassy in Amman denied on Monday [9th November] media reports about a Mauritanian-Israeli deal to bury Israeli nuclear waste in Mauritanian territories. Embassy sources said the visit of Mauritanian Foreign Minister Cheikh El Afia Ould Mohamed Khouna to Israel last October aimed at encouraging Palestinians and Israelis to enhance permanent and balanced peace in the heels of the signing of the Wye Plantation agreement.

The visit is also aimed at serving Palestinian interests, the sources added. Media reports have said that during his two-day visit to Israel Mr Khouna concluded a deal that allows the Hebrew state to bury its nuclear toxic waste in Mauritania.
